The classic Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol has had it fair share of films produced that were inspired by the book. When I was younger I worked on a stage version of the novel as a stage hand. It is a Christmas story that has become a classic for generations, and now, using some of the most advanced computer and 3-D technology Disney has produced their own version of the classic tale, starring actors Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman. A Christmas Carol is about a man named Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is a very cheap man that only cares about money. He has no friends and his family disowned him because of his greedy ways. He does not believe in the spirit of Christmas, and even gives his own employees a hard time about having Christmas day off. However, this Christmas will be different. Scrooge’s partner has recently passed away, and this Christmas season his deceased business partner’s ghost, along with three other spirits is going to pay Mr. Scrooge a visit. The three ghosts, (Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present, and Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come) are going to take Scrooge on a journey though the past, present and the future and show him all that he has done wrong in life and what his actions may lead too in the future. Needless to say, after seeing these visions, Scrooge begins to realize that there is more to life than just money, and that celebrating Christmas is the time of the year where everyone should be together with family and be happy. Disney, along with acclaimed director Robert Zemeckis really gives us one great rendition of A Christmas Carol. Using the latest in animation technology, the film comes to life in more ways than one. I was absolutely blown away by the stunning visuals and animation. In order to make such a film, the actors had to dress up in animation suits on a sound stage and perform all the actions with one another without the use of sets, costumes and visuals to help with their performance. Actors such as Jim Carry, Gary Oldman, Bob Hoskins, Cary Elwes and Robin Wright are some of the talent that appear in the film and lend their voices to the characters. Disney has released A Christmas Carol in many different formats. I happen to have the DVD and Blu-ray combo pack, however you can also buy the four disc combo pack which includes not only the DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy; but a 3-D Blu-ray disc that is compatible with 3-D television sets. The Blu-ray disc includes features such as Behind The Carol: The Full Motion Capture Experience, Digital Advent Calendar, and a revealing picture in picture viewing mode. The Blu-ray and DVD both include the features Capturing A Christmas Carol, On Set with Sammi, and Deleted Scenes. I have seen many version of A Christmas Carol. At least once a year, sometime in December I’ll catch one film version of the story on cable television. However, none of them can compare to this version. As far as I am concerned this is a masterpiece that truly captures the spirit of not only the Holiday season, but of animation as well. My only concern about the film is that it does have some scary and violent imagery that may not be suitable for children under the age of seven. However, if you want your children to experience the classic telling of Charles Dickens novel, this film is well worth picking up. It is a disc set that is sure to viewed by generations to come. It’s a true Disney classic.
