The Review

When I was growing up back in the 1980’s My sisters and I were huge fans of the Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoons that played on our television sets after school and on Saturday mornings. We had their first full length movie on VHS and rented many of the episodes at our local video store. Needless to say, the cartoon was a big part of my childhood. Now, almost two decades later, a live action film was made that did well at the box office and caught on with a new generation of kids to fall in love with.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squekquel starts off right where the first film left off. Alvin, Simon and Theodore are touring the world having a great time, and doing a few benefit shows. However, when Alvin takes the spotlight at a show, he accidentally causes a big accident to happen in which Dave, their father seriously hurt.  Dave’s brother Toby takes care of the chipmunks and the boys are sent to the local high school for an education. Finding it hard to fit in with their human peers, the chipmunks beat up a bunch of kids who are bullying them. Lucky for them, the school principal is a huge fan, and she ask the chipmunks to represent them in a competition to win the school a grant to save it’s music program. However, their old manager has found a new set of chipmunks to represent an all girls chipmunks band; The Chipettes. They are also sent to the same school and the boys meet their talented on stage rivals and a competition for who will represent the school is on.

I personally was not a big fan of this film, but my nephew and my daughter seemed to enjoy it for the most part. At ages three and four the two of them really didn’t care much for the scenes that involved the story, but did like the musical numbers. As an adult and a fan of the cartoon, I felt myself not caring much for the music. Sure, they played some older tunes, but most of them were songs that are more recent, of which I am not familiar.  However, I think children ages six though twelve would probably enjoy the film the most out of any age group. It is a film that was tailor made for the youth of today.

The film is light on the violence, yet there is some mild violence which is mostly done off screen yet is implied. There is a scene which involves Simon being tossed in a garbage can, and Alvin and the girls getting involved in a chase on a motor cycle with Ian, (the girls and boys former manager )in tow after them with a toy helicopter.  There is also a scene in which Dave gets hurt and the boys almost get eaten by a bird of prey. Yet, despite these few minor things the film poses no real violence or anything that can be considered remotely bad.

The Blu-ray disc comes with a ton of special features. These features include ‘Muck Music Machine, Music in a Nutshell Song Trivia, A-l-v-i-n-n-n-n!!! Album Maker, Music Video’s with optional sing along lyrics and eight featurettes: “Mucking” History- 50 Years of Chipmunk Mischief, Mayhem and Music;  Meet the Chipettes: Rockin’ Rising stars; Music Mania; The Chipmucks-Behind the Squeaking; A-NUT-omy of a Scene; Meet the Stuffies!; and Shake Your Groove Thing! With Rosero. The BD-LIVE features include Live Lookup powered by IMDB.  The set also comes with a DVD and Digital copy of the film as well.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squekquel is a film that was made to cater to this generation of children to enjoy. The Chipmunks have been around for over fifty years and have evolved along the way. The story of their lives still remains the same, but has been updated to fit with the times. It is a lot simpler and less emotional and violent as the cartoon was back when I was a kid. It is a fun harmless film that fun for kids to enjoy, yet I did enjoy the first film more than this one. If your child is a fan, then this would make the perfect gift to add to your family’s Blu-ray collection.
