SYNOPSIS

Alvin and the Chipmunk: Go to the Movies, is a DVD that has a few episodes from the famous cartoon of the1980's and early 1990's.  This particular DVD features Alvin, Simon and Theodore in scenario's that are straight out of the movies of that time. Such films depicted are Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Except it's re-titled here as Funny, We Shrunk the Adults, where Simon's experiential shrinking machine accidentally shrinks Dave and their neighbor Ms. Miller, while the boys are playing with some new kids that have moved in across the street. Back to the Future is also represented, titled Back to Our Future where the boys travel back to 1958, the year they were actually created, they meet themselves from the past and learn about how the events in their history could affect the present day. And then their is a story called Bigger which is taken from the Tom Hanks classic BIG and has Alvin wishing at a magic jukebox that he is bigger and thus get's his wish, but soon relizes that being an adult is not as fun as being a kid.

VIOLENCE/GRAPHIC CONTENT/language

While I can't say that this cartoon has anything violent or graphic about it. There is still some unrealistic things involved and there are some actions in the cartoons that can be deemed as over the top. Such things include the actions the boys take when they try to prove to the new kids on the block that they can do whatever they want, which includes ordering pizza, ponies and other over the top things, and even messing up the house and skateboarding indoors. There are a lot of other things as well.

In terms of language, there are a few things that concern me. While I never really did notice it as a kid, I really noticed it now as an adult. It seems as Alvin and his brothers are always in trouble and are constantly arguing with one another.  Alvin even uses words like stupid and dumb to describe things and people. Dave their father is no better either as he seems to always be mad about things as well.

OVERALL VIEWS

I grew up watching the Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon as a kid. I loved it then, it was one of my favorites', but now after revisiting it I realize that it was not the most positive cartoon on television, while the outcome of each episode does have positive elements, I was really surprised about all the bickering going on in this cartoon.  While it is a cartoon about chipmunk brothers and their adventures that at times get them into trouble, to me it seemed like there was way to much of them fighting with one another or trying to out do each other all the time. Like I said above the cartoon does have some positive elements, but there are just things that stood out to me as parent as not being very positive.

The DVD is pretty much bare bones and really does not have any kind of special features involved The quality of cartoons is just the same as it was when it was on television all some many years ago, even the close caption logo appears at the beginning.  The image has not been digitally restored, which might turn off a new generation of kids that want to see what cartoon their parents were into as kids.

Overall, why it was fun to go back and watch a cartoon that I really enjoyed as a child, I was kind of bummed by the bare bones DVD and the lack of effort that was put into them.  I think the cartoon at least deserved a digital transfer onto the DVD so the images would at least look good, instead we just get the regular analog cartoon. If you don't mind watching it that way, and your kids don't mind all the better. But I don't think it's going to be a big hit with them.
