The Review

With the Christmas season just right around the corner it is expected that there will be a few Disney Christmas films released on Blu-ray and DVD this Holiday season. One of the first to hit my door step is Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas.

The story takes during the middle of the first film and is what you could call a side story, or more of a giant deleted Christmas scene that took place during the first film. The story revolves around a flashback of the first Christmas that Belle and the Beast had in the castle. It did not go as smooth as Belle would of have liked it to as the Beast forbid Christmas from being celebrated in the castle because that was around the time the curse was put on him. Disobeying The Beast’s wishes Belle and the servants of the castle agree to have Christmas anyway. Belle eventually meets Forte a pipe organ that The Beast once went to for advice when the curse was put on him. Feeling that the holds power over the Beast, he advises Belle to venture into the deepest part of the forest to cut down a giant Christmas tree. However, the tree is too much for Belle to handle and she falls thought the ice.  The Beast learns what has happened and rescues her. However he is not happy and puts Belle in the dungeon of the castle. But, The Beast then finds a moving story book that Belle was going to give him for Christmas and has a change of heart. He then apologies to Belle and lets the Christmas celebration once again happen in the castle.

I started watching this Blu-ray with my four year old daughter. She loves Beauty and the Beast and was very excited to watch this disc. However, after the first few scenes she got a little scared of Forte the pipe organ. His look frightened here and so did his voice. She was not a big fan at all of the villain was also very upset about the way the Beast tossed Belle in the dungeon. There is also a scene were the beast kills/destroys Forte the pipe organ, and while she was happy that The Beast had a change of heart about Christmas and did away with Forte, as a parent I kind of felt for a Christmas film that it was a bit harsh and violent. It did have a nice happy ending with a great celebration scene but it had it moments that took away from any kind of Christmas cheer.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes many special features such as Disney’s Sing Me A Story with Belle: Stick To It (Don’t Give Up) a song where Belle inspires Kids to keep on trying. The Disney Sing Along Mode, Disney’s Song Selections, where you can select and sing your favorite songs from the film. There is also a Behind the Scenes Featurette, and music video for “As Long As There’s Christmas”.  The Blu-ray disc also features a Enchanted Environment feature which brings the castles fireplace right into your home.

Overall, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas is a very well put together film but I don’t think it’s best for children under the age of six to view. My four year old daughter was first scared of The Beast when she saw the first film, but after a second viewing and some guidance about the film by me she understood why he was so angry all the time and it is now one of her favorite films. I guess this one being a new film with a Christmas theme she expected it to be more of a fun film than a serious one, and that creepy organ didn’t help either. So, why the Christmas theme is apparent in this film and it is littered with all the Christmas joy one can ask for, it is not a film that I think younger kids under the age of six will enjoy as much as older kids will.
