The Review

The transition from Elementary School to Middle School is something that majority of most children fear, especially if you have always been looked at by your peers as an outsider. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a film that takes the fears and experiences that kids who are out of touch with the rest of their peers would normally face on a day to day basis and spins them into a light hearted comedy.

Based on the best selling book by Jeff Kinney, the film follows the middle school life of Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) ,  a short outcast of a child that just wants to be noticed among his peers. Greg’s best friend is an overweight kid named Rowley Jefferson (Robert Capron). Rowley is a clueless kid, which is still into playing with toys, video games and being an all around Mama’s boy. The two friends brave middle school and try their best to fit in, by joining all kinds of clubs and doing extra curricular activities. However, when things don’t work out for them, the two friends become divided, with Rowley gaining the attention of his classmates when Greg accidentally breaks Rowley’s arm.  Upset, Greg and Rowley agree to go their separate ways when Rowley wins a cartoon drawing contest. Greg finds himself quickly becoming the schools most unpopular kid, after failed attempts to be noticed. However, things will change all over a piece of rotten Swiss cheese in the schoolyard that every kid in the school fears to touch. Rowley and Greg however will have no choice.

When I was in middle school, I can remember it being a fearful time. However, I never experienced terrible embarrassment such as the characters in this film did A film like this is one that is made to poke fun at middle school and the politics of popularity that go with it.  The script is very well written and I fell in love with the character from the beginning of the film all the way to the end. The acting is well rounded from the adults roles to the kids with some new and familiar faces in the roles.  It’s a fun filled film with plenty of great comedic action and some witty punch lines.

The Cheesiest Edition Blu-ray and DVD combo pack includes a digital copy of the film, a deleted pages from Greg’s Diary, a look inside Rowley’s Diary and includes a bunch of other different features such as “The Benefits of the Cheese Touch”, “Chirag’s Trail of Tears”, Rowley’s lost Zoo-Wee Mama Cartoons, and more gross, silly Fregley fun.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the first of many books to be made into a movie. The second book to film adaptation is already in its preproduction stages and is scheduled for a 2011 release. The film is rated PG for some rude humor and language, and besides a scuffle with some older kids towards the end of the film and some wrestling, the film is not at all violent, and the comedy is light hearted.  Although its safe got children over the age of five to watch; Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a film that is best suited for children ages nine and up, due to the fact that it more aimed at that age group. Yet, in my opinion it’s a fun filled film for the whole family to enjoy, or to enjoy on your own. It really is a film for just about anyone. It’s that good. I highly recommend it.
