SYNOPSIS |

Before Walt Disney became the worlds most adored and popular animator of our time he created a series of black and white cartoons centered around his first character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. But Walt Disney learned a valuable lesson when he was younger and lost the rights to the character of Oswald. Learning this lesson however inspired Walt to create the know very popular worldwide icon that is Mickey Mouse. Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was Walt Disney's first popular series of short cartoons that were produced between nineteen twenty seven and nineteen twenty eight. But those years came and went and the popular rabbit cartoons were rarely seen again. Now for the first time ever Oswald The Lucky Rabbit returns home to Disney and these short series of Walt Disney's first cartoons are now available for the first time ever on DVD.

VIOLENCE/GRAPHIC CONTENT/language |
There is a lot of cartoon violence in these series of short films and there is even some content that involves dead animals as well. However the animation is so old and is not detailed in a very graphic way at all. You need to remember that these films were made in the nineteen twenties and cartoons and films did not have the graphic content or technology that we do today when comes to producing them. Many things in film back then were deemed unacceptable f it was done in a violent and graphic manner, however if the violence was done in a comical sense it was deemed funny and was something people of that era got a good laugh out of. There are a lot of things that can be deemed as violent in these shots by today's standards such content in the cartoon includes the use of guns by the characters, clubbing and beating each other, Oswald even removes his own arms and legs to use them as tools. There are all sorts of gags and tricks that the character play on each other, but these images were labeled harmless for their time because they had comical appeal. I don't think children of today would actually even be able to sit though these classic gems because they are in black in white, there is no dialogue, and the cartoons themselves are very plan looking. However they are a big piece of history and if you want your child to appreciate what Walt Disney did for the world then it might not be a bad idea to sit down with your child and show him or her one or two of these classics and explain the history of them to you kids.

OVERALL VIEWS |

I have seen many documentaries and television shows on the life of Walt Disney and have always been interested in seeing his first cartoon series, however I knew that these films were lost and most likely I would never get to see any of them. But leave it to the great minds whom run Disney studios today to go out into the world and track down the lost prints of Walt's first cartoons and acquire the right to put them on DVD for all the world to see and enjoy. There is one sad fact however; Disney was not able to track down the original prints and they are feared to be lost forever to time, so Disney sent a team or researchers around the world to acquire archived prints and copies of the shorts and did their best to try to clean them up and put them on DVD, as Leonard Maltin states in the introduction to the DVD some of the short will look better than others. Some of them actually still have their grainy look. This of coarse is unlike Disney as they are known for high quality DVD entertainment, but I'm glad that the Disney company put that aside to present Oswald The Lucky Rabbit to the world the way Walt Disney himself would of wanted it. The rebirth of Disney's first cartoons to the world is one a very lucky treat to all Disney fans. It's been a very long time since these short cartoons have been seen by anyone and it's great that they can finally be shown to the world on DVD. This DVD set is a true treasure to own on DVD, although they are cartoons that a bit dated for our time, they are a big piece of Disney history and are a must own for all fans of Disney's work.
