In the past few months Disney took a little bit of a vacation from releasing some of their major yearly titles on Blu-ray as well as their back-log of classics. Well, Let the games begin. The first of many classic Disney movies is about to Hit Blu-ray for the first time starting with the 30th anniversary of The Fox and The Hound & The Fox and the Hound 2 on Disney Blu-ray and DVD combo pack. The Fox and The Hound is a story of friendship between two animals that were breed to be enemies but become the best of friends. An orphaned red fox named Tod and a puppy named Copper meet one day in the forest and become the best of friends. However, once Copper’s owner catches him wandering off he ties him up in the back yard. This however does not deter Tod who visits Copper daily and the two play together. That is until Tod is warned and chased off by Copper’s owner Slade that the two are not to play together. Yet when Slade goes off hunting the two begin to play again but are warned that they can no longer be friends by Big Mama, a loving and caring woman. Months pass, and the two grow into adulthood. Copper is now an experienced hunting dog along with Chief and his owner Slade they begin hunting in the forest when they come across Tod. Copper tells Tod to run and tries to divert Chief and Slade in another direction. But Chief has Tod scent and chases him onto a railroad bridge, where Chief falls and is injured. Copper swears revenge and together he and Slade go hunting for Tod. Yet the friendship will be fortified when a bear attacks both parties and Tod puts him life on the line to save Copper. The two then becomes friends again and Copper tries his best to convince his friends and owner that Tod is a good Fox and they should all get along. The Fox and the Hound Two is a direct to video sequel where a traveling band comes to town. Copper is excited to see the band and begins to sing along with them during their performance. After a member of the band walks off, Copper is asked to join. He joins the band on the condition that he is a stray dog and does not have an owner. However in the process he abandons Tod, who knows that Copper is lying when he meets the bands former member Dixie. She informs Tod that only strays are allowed in the band. A talent scout is coming to the fair to see the band of stray dogs perform, however the performance is ruined when Tod lures Copper's owner, Slade, to the fair in a wild chase. Copper and Tod have a bit of a fight, but in the end they both admit their mistakes and all is well again. The Fox and The Hound and The Fox and the Hound Two both have their fair share of animated violence. The Fox and The Hound is a lot like Bambi in a sense with all the hunting and the bear attack, but is not as scary as it was in Bambi. The Fox and the Hound Two has a few chase scenes and of course there are fights between the friends, lies are told and so on, but it’s not that violent compared to what happens in the first film. This is a warning to parents that might want to let their little ones jump right on this one. I would say the film is more suitable for children ages five and up. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack has many features. The Blu-ray disc has both films on it in an enhanced high definition format along with a featurette titled Unlikely Friends – a collection of stories about surprising friendships in the animal kingdom. The two discs on DVD feature both The Fox and the Hound and The Fox and the Hound Two on separate discs. Both include features such as the making of each film as well as music videos and sing-a-longs. Overall, The Fox and the Hound has never been the strongest of Disney classics. It is a good film but it does not compare to many of the other classics it has to contend with in the Disney collection. Both films are fun and full of good life lesions and adventure. I am a huge fan of everything Disney puts together. I think that no matter what your opinion is about any Disney film that when it is released in any format for a limited time that you must get a copy of the film and share it with your kids. There is nothing more rewarding than the happiness on a child’s face when they experience any Disney film for the first time. So I recommend picking up The Fox and The Hound and The Fox and the Hound Two Disney Blu-ray and DVD combo pack. |
