Super heroes are making a comeback, they have been for the past few years, however now that Disney owns Marvel, your going to see super heroes come back and become just as popular as they were in their heyday. Disney and Pixar did have their own super heroes before they acquired Marvel, in fact they created their own characters and universe with The Incredibles. The animated feature hit movie screens in 2004, and was a huge box office success both domestically and worldwide; and now it will be made available for the first time on Blu-ray on April 12th.

The story is about a family that has super powers. However, long before they became a family, Bob Parr (Mr Incredible) and his wife Helen (Elastigirl) lived during the times when super heroes were loved by the public and crime was low. However, when Mr. Incredible is sued by a man that was trying to commit suicide (sighting that Mr. Incredible hurt him while saving him); people all over the world started to sue other super heroes, and then the public turned their backs on the heroes. All the super heroes go into hiding; they leave their lives as heroes and get regular day jobs living among the normal people of the world. Mr. Incredible now works a dead end job at a bank, He is now married to Elastigirl and they have three children, two of which have super powers of their own. However, Mr. Incredible is pushed to the edge at his job, and he and his friend Frozone, decide to get back into the game of fighting crime undercover. When they are discovered by a secret agent, she hires Mr. Incredible to do top secret missions, to take on an evil robot. However, Mr. Incredible is about to find out that someone from his past has turned himself into the next super villain and that once again the world is going to need super heroes to stop crime and world domination. Together with his buddy Frozone and his family, Mr. Incredible will once again rise to become the world’s greatest super hero and stop the new threat to mankind.

The Incredibles is one of those Pixar/Disney films that have a large adult appeal to it. Sure, kids will love the film, especially young boys and girls like my daughter who love super heroes. One thing that might concern parents is that the film is heavy in animated violence. There is everything from guns being fired to giant robots throwing around our heroes like rag dolls. Sure, it is all animated violence, but there is a lot to be concerned about. I would say the films safe for ages seven and up, however, if your child is a bit more mature for their age, it may be a film you, as a parent might want to view first before letting them watch it.
The Blu-ray combo pack comes with two Blu-ray discs with a tom of features, plus the film on DVD and a digital copy. On the first Blu-ray disc the features include two short films Boundin and Jack-Jack Attack. There is also the feature Jack-Jack Attack Exploded as well as The Incredibles Revisited: Filmmakers Roundtable. Disc two has a lot more special features which include some interactive features such as “The New Nomanisan” Island Redevelopment, Plan – A Guided Tour of the Vacation Island Paradise, Paths to Pixar: Story Artists and Studio Stoires: Gary’s Birthday plus many more features. The DVD also includes the two short films Boundin and Jack-Jack Attack also.

I really like this film and consider it one of the better stories that Pixar animation has put together over the past sixteen years. The animation is great also, however we all know that in a Pixar film the animation gets better with each film. What I like about the film is that its story is consistent with today’s superhero films. It has unique characters voiced by some great actors such as Craig T Nelson, Samuel L. Jackson, Holly Hunter and Jason Lee. As an adult, I can honestly say that I probably enjoyed this one more than my kids did.
Overall, The Incredibles Blu-ray combo pack is a great buy. Disney put together a great combo pack with many great features and not to mention the great transfer of the film to Blu-ray. The film might not be suitable for younger children, but it is a great animated feature that is sure to rack up some hours in the player by your older children. The combo pack also comes with a free movie ticket to see Cars 2 which hits theaters on June 24th. Once again, the animated violence may be of concern before you let younger children view the film, however it is a great film and the Blu-ray combo pack is well worth adding to your Disney collection.
