Madeline is a popular fictional character that was created by Ludwig Bemelman. The character first appeared in a book in 1939 that was to become the first of many written and published by Bemelman. As the character grew in popularity during the 1940s and 50’s Bemelman published numerous sequels to the first Madeline book. They soon became so popular that the character became the focus of a short film that was nominated for an Academy Award. Since the beginning, the character of Madeline has had several movies, and television series as well as a live action film all based on the books and the character. To this day, new books are still being written and published by Ludwig Bemelman’s grandson, John Bemelmans-Marciano. The latest of Madeline’s adventures to hit DVD from Shout Factory Kids is Madeline’s Christmas & Other Wintery Tales. The DVD has five Holiday based adventures featuring Madeline, her dog Genevieve, her eleven classmates and her next-door neighbor Pepito. The Episodes on the DVD include Madeline’s Winter Vacation, Madeline at the North Pole, Madeline and Santa, Madeline’s Holiday with Mr. Grump and Madeline and the Ice Skates. The DVD does not include any special features. Because a lot of the Madeline episodes are from the late 1980’s up until the late 1990’s some of the animation in these episodes may not please the generation of children today that are spoiled with great computer animation. My daughter for example was not that big of a fan of the first Madeline DVD we received this year, however when we received the Halloween one she became kind of interested and has viewed the DVD about two or three times since. With this DVD focusing on Christmas, she was more excited to watch it, and although she walked away a few times, she did make her way back into our family room before the DVD was over and watched the last two episodes on the disc. Any show about Christmas and the Holiday time of year, no matter how dated it is will always garnish the attention of children. Christmas is a holiday that no child forgets about, and it’s the buildup until Christmas day that is always what I look forward too. Unlike many other distribution labels, Shout Factory does the smart thing by releasing this Christmas title early this year to give shoppers more time to pick it up as gifts. The DVD would make a great stocking stuffer for young girls. All five episodes are cute and all have a good message that involves the celebration of Christmas and holiday cheer.
