Marmaduke is based on the 1954 comic strip created by Brad Anderson. To this day, the comic is still in circulation. There have been many attempts by popular newspapers to cancel the strip, however many have been meet with protest, some have even called it one of the worst comic strips created. But, despite some negative criticism, they made it into a live action family film. The film follows almost the same concept as the comic book with a more modern up-to -date storyline. When Marmaduke and his family move from from Kansas to California, Marmaduke tries to reinvent himself in front of all the dogs that hang out at the local dog park. Marmaduke is not your average, every day, normal dog. He tends to get himself into a lot of trouble with both his human and canine companions. However, when a group of rogue dogs help Marmaduke reinvent himself, and some luck at a surfing competition puts him front and center among all his canine friends. He soon learns that being popular and noticed does not always get you what you want. When its discovered that many of the things he has done are nothing but a hoax to gain attention, Marmaduke is shunned and has to find a way to make things right once again. Meanwhile, his owner, Phil, has been so busy with his new job at an organic pet food company that he has put his family second to his work. With the help of Marmaduke, Phil soon learns that family is more important. Marmaduke is a film that has a lot of comical cartoon-like humor and very mild violence, such as some funny dog and cats fights, most of which is done off screen. The film as a whole has a lot of good important lessons about adolescence that are good for kids to learn, even though its done through the eyes of a dog. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack consists of many special features such as featurettes like Cowabarka!- More Surfing Dogs, Canine Casting, Puppy Marmaduke & Kitty Carlos: Home Movies, Marmaduke Mayhem! Gag Reel, Deleted Scenes and more. Marmaduke is a very funny film. Marmaduke is voiced by Owen Wilson and George Lopez is hilarious as Carlos the Cat. The film is tame enough for kids over the age of five to watch, but for younger children, it may be too intense at times. It is at times goofy and the story may be a bit wild and out there, but all films with talking animals usually are. Overall, Marmaduke is a great family film and is one that will keep the whole family laughing with each viewing.
