The Review

When I was a kid I was fortunate enough to have both my parents around the majority of the time. My mother was always home and my father worked for my grandfather who was a man that took care of his family. I grew up with the motto family first, and everything else just follows. Needless to say I had a great childhood filled with many adventures and family outings. But when I got out of line my parents would put me in my place, especially my mother. She was great with my sisters and I, but when it came to cleaning up and doing the right thing she was there with an iron fist making sure we got our chores and homework done before we did anything else. In a way she was a lot like Milo’s mother in this film; Mars Needs Moms.  I don’t think I ever said the one cruel thing that Milo did to his mother in this film, but there were times when I was younger that I thought it. I think every child in one way or another does at some point. But, mom always comes though and the though of wishing she was not there simply dies with the stupidly of our words. Except in Milo’s case, where aliens come and take his mother away.

Mars Needs Moms is about a race of female aliens from Mars who have superiority complex. They throw all the men when they are children into an underground garbage dump to live in filth, while they reign supreme as the perfect race. However, they need the strength of mothers to help instill discipline and fear in the female children. So they kidnap the most perfect mothers on earth and use a type of machine to do just that. However, Milo walks in on the aliens taking his mother and sneaks onto the ship that brings them to Mars. While there he meets up with another Human living with the male aliens in the underground garbage dump. His name is Gribble and he says he was from a top secret government mission to Mars that no one knew about. It went all wrong and he was the only survivor. Gribble has tapped into the alien network and can control what goes on above if need be. He agrees to help Milo along with a mystery alien that is spreading joy by tagging the alien colony with beautiful colors to bring back life to the race. Together they will try their best to save Milo’s mother and bring peace to the alien race on Mars once again.

The film does have a few scary moments involving the aliens, some betrayal, scenes involving heights and cartoonish daredevil like skits. But all in all it is a fun film that I would say is safe for children ages four and over to view with their parents. My four year old enjoyed this film a lot and even found the aliens to be funny.

The Blu-ray DVD combo pack has a lot of features such as an Extended Opening Sequence, Deleted Scenes, Life on Mars: A full motion-capture experience with audio commentary. On both the DVD and Blu-ray there are also the features Martian 101, where you can learn to speak the Martian language with help from an expert. There is also the feature Fun with Seth, which features the on set adventures and antics with actors Seth Green and Dan Fogler.

Unfortunately, Mars Needs Moms was a big box office flop. One so many levels it is really not fair the criticism and finger pointing that a lot of critics did. I’ve read everything from this film is demoralizing to women, to it being blamed that it makes the modern day house wife look like a slave. Obviously these critics were not raised in a loving household. I think what the filmmakers were trying to accomplish here is a story that says how important family is, and how as the human race over the past two decades we are begging to lose that sense of family. Think about it. The nuclear family has turned into the working family. Mother and Fathers work all day long to pay the bills while their kids are stuck in day care or are being raised by another family member. That is what is happening in this county right now. We have become a country of workaholics, as Milo’s father was in this film, and we have forgotten the value of family. In Milo’s case his mother was there for him and he sacrificed his wellbeing to save her from a race that was worse than us.  The fact that the female alien race was dominated over the males does not mean all females should be seen as evil when it comes to disciplining their children. Housewives have the hardest jobs in the world. It’s not easy taking care of children.  Simply put this is a movie about live of family. Even though the film highlights the relationship between mother and son; it is a film that centers its attention on the importance of family. That is why I liked this film, and why I recommend it.
