I originally first saw an episode of Martha Speaks on PBS right after Curious George aired at three o’clock PM eastern time. Martha Speaks was on at three thirty and usually if I had nothing planned that day I would extend my daughter television time and let her watch Martha Speaks. My first experience with the show was a good one, and as time went on my daughter would ask me to watch the show with her and the episodes began to grow on me. For anyone who does not know anything about the show its story is that of a child’s reading book. It has such a great concept and back-story to it, which I have to recommend the show to anyone who has young kids. Martha is a dog who just happened to eat her owner’s alphabet soup one day. The soup was made by an old lady who had a secret recipe. Little did this old woman know that her simple soup recipe had given Martha the power to speak. Now every day Martha must eat her alphabet soup so that she can communicate with everyone around her and teach people and dogs alike all the different and important things in life, such as self respect, confidence and sharing. She also teaches children other life lessons as well. Martha Speaks: Martha Says it with Flowers is a DVD comprised of over an hour and a half of eight fun episodes of Martha Speaks. The episodes include, Raiders of the Lost Art, Ice Scream, Martha Sings, TD Makes the Band, Martha Gets Spooked, Martha Changes Her Luck (A personal favorite of mine), There Goes The Neighborhood, and of course the titled episode, Martha Says It with Flowers. The DVD also includes a few special features such as Resources for Parents, Coloring Pages that you can print out by inserting the DVD into your computers DVD player. In addition each episode of Martha Speaks includes ten vocabulary words that help your child understand the meaning of each word in the episode in which Martha will use the words in sentences and give examples of their meanings. Also, while going though the DVD on my computer to look at the coloring pages, I also found some files which contain work sheets that have all the vocabulary words from certain episodes. Its just another tool this disc provides for parents should they themselves want to teach their kids more of what they learned from watching the shows. PBS puts out a lot of great educational programming for children of all ages. Martha Speaks, in my opinion ranks up there as one of their top shows. The show itself has a great storyline and characters that children can relate too. This DVD is not only one that is meant to entertain children but it’s also one full of many educational benefits. PBS shows they really care when they not only point out on the DVD box cover that the show helps enrich children’s vocabulary, but they take it one step further by including work sheets and coloring pages for parents to print out for their children and learn from them. I highly recommend this DVD for all parents. If you never saw the show before, I advise that you try to catch this one of Public Television with your children. It’s a fun show with some great educational and moral values thrown in. The DVD is well worth adding to you and your child’s collection. |
