This past year Disney has released a fine array of their classic short films as part of their Walt Disney Animation Collection of discs. I have reviewed several of them for the site so far this year and they never seem to disappoint. This time around Disney has put together some of their greatest Christmas based short films on their Mickey’s Christmas Carol DVD. We all know the famous story of A Christmas Carol where Ebenezer Scrooge the cheapest man in the village has a dislike for the Christmas Holiday and refuses to give in the spirit of the holiday, only to be visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Mickey’s Christmas Carol follows that same concept but includes it’s most lovable character in the roles of the character of the story. Of course Scrooge McDuck is in the lead role of Ebenezer Scrooge and Mickey’ Mouse as Bob Cratchit and includes other Disney characters such as Donald and Dasiy Duck and Hughie, Dewy and Louie. Jiminy Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Willie the Giant as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Pete as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come and of course Minnie Mouse as Mrs. Cratchit. There are plenty of other familiar faces as well in the story. Besides the story of Mickey’s Christmas Carol, the disc also includes Pluto’s Christmas Tree, where Pluto helps Mickey find the perfect tree only to be pestered by Chip N Dale who live in the Christmas tree that Mickey chops down,. The Small One, about a young Judean boy who tries to sell his donkey to someone who would care for the animal as much as he does. The disc also includes the 1932 cartoon Santa’s Workshop in color. The disc is pretty basic and just includes the four short films and previews to a ton of Disney movies that are coming soon to theaters, DVD and Blu-ray. The DVD also includes an collectable Litho Print inside as well. Overall, This is yet another great disc in the Disney Short film Collection and features some great shorts to get you and your children into the holiday spirit. While I think that the cartoons on this disc are for the most part suitable for children over the age of five. As adults we must remember that some of the classic cartoons did include some animated violence and some things that we don’t consider suitable now, that in the past were no big deal. In Mickey’s Christmas Carol for example Pete, who plays the role of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is smoking a cigar. Just a reminder to parents, should they not want their kids to see such things. Other than that the disc has that great Disney classic feel.
