Starting off with the famous Jiminy Cricket singing "When You Wish Upon A Star" and then going into the story of Pinocchio. The story of a woodworker named Geppetto who creates a puppet of a boy and names him Pinocchio . After showing off his new puppet to his cat Figaro and his goldfish Cleo he goes to bed, but not without noticing a shooting star in the sky in which he wishes Pinocchio would become a real boy. They all then go to bed. Jiminy then wakes up to find a blue fairly, knowing that Geppetto has been a good man, she turns Pinocchio into a boy. However he does still look like a puppet and the only way he can become a true boy is to be brave, truthful and unselfish and do good by following his conscience. The fairy also assigns Jiminy to help Pinocchio. If he lies his nose will grow and if he does not find his true self and do all that is good he will never become a real boy. Pinocchio journey to becoming a boy begins. He will be tested by both good and bad people. While off to his first day of school he never makes it there. He meets the fox Honest John and the mute cat Gideon that convince him to become an actor in the puppet show for Stromboli. He does so and makes Stromboli a lot of money. However he then becomes a prisoner of Stromboli who locks him in a bird cage. He is rescued but soon becomes a prisoner of the evil Coachman, he promises Pinocchio that he will have all the fun he wants on Pleasure Island. It seems like fun so he goes there. Little does he know that it's a place where bad kids can do whatever they want, but there is a catch. The more your bad, the more you start to turn into a donkey. Once you turn into a full blown donkey The Coachman sells you as slave labor to work in the salt mines. Pinocchio starts to turn but is save by Jiminy and they escape and go home. They find out that Geppetto is gone. They learns that Geppetto has gone looking for him in the sea along with his pets. Now Pinocchio and Jiminy will search the sea to look for Geppetto while fighting the animals of the ocean and ending up in a whales stomach. It's a film that is fun and entertaining but also teaches some valuable lessons as well.

One thing we need to remember is that Pinocchio was made in 1940. Back then there was no MPAA to evaluate the movies to see who they were suitable for. There are even some things now, that back then were not considered a bad thing, that are now. Such things include smoking. Which the film does have some underage smoking and drinking while on Pleasure Island. The boys drink, smoke, gamble and vandalize things. The good thing about this scene is that the more bad things the boys do, the more they begin to turn into Donkey's in a sense referring to them as acting like Jackasses. The films villains also lie, cheat steel and kidnap. Lying is a theme in the film and every time Pinocchio fibs he nose grows. Which is a good thing in that it shows kids that lying will get you nowhere. As for some of the films villains, they may come off a bit scary to some younger kids, especially that of Monstro the whale whom the films big action scene hunts down Pinocchio and company in the sea. There are other things here and there that may be of concern, but there is a positive to all the wrong in this film in that it shows children that bad things happen to those who do bad things. So why some of the films story may involve some things that parents might not want their kids to see, the real message of the story is one that should be kept in mind.

The first time I saw Pinocchio I was young at the time, but I really enjoyed the film for it's sense of adventure and great storyline. I also rented it on VHS many times as well as a child, and was reintroduced to it in my High School years while babysitting for my young cousins. Despite it being made in 1940, the film still is a lot of fun to watch. When Jiminy Cricket sings "When You Wish Upon A Star" I'm always reminded of the many times I have visited Disney World, one of my favorite places in the world to visit. It always gives me that happy feeling and besides that song the sound track to the film has always been one of my favorites among all the music that Disney has put in their films. I really have a place in my heart for Pinocchio it's a film that really catches the magic of Disney. Pinocchio was Disney's second studio films following the release of Snow White and Seven Dwarfs. It was a major success for the studio and was produced for close to three millions dollars and bought in a little of thirty eight million in it's first release. Since then Pinocchio was released in theaters ten times making Disney more money that ever. It was also released on VHS four different times and twice on DVD (including this release). Now it's also on blu-ray as well, and what a disc the blu-ray is. First and foremost I have to hand it to Disney for doing one thing I wish all studios would do. With the Blu-ray disc it also includes the film on DVD as well. This way people who are saving up for a Blu-ray player can buy the blu-ray disc, enjoy the film on a standard DVD player and save the experience on blu-ray until they can upgrade. The Blu-ray disc includes a lot of features that are also available on the platinum edition DVD which includes a featurette called No Strings Attached: The Making of Pinocchio, Deleted Scenes, which includes The Story of the Grandfather Tree, and a different perspective of Geppetto inside the belly of Monstro the whale, a recently unearthed alternate ending to the film which reveals the storyboard of a different version of the end of the movie. The Sweat Box, a peak at the room where Walt Disney went over reels and took notes on the progress of his films. The disc also includes Live Action Reference Footage, Pinocchio Art Galleries and Deleted songs. There is also a game on the DVD called Pinocchio Puzzles. The two disc version also includes commentary with Leonard Maltin, Eric Goldberg and J. B. Kaufman. Plus Pinocchio’s Matter of Facts and a song selection feature. Blu-ray only features include a lot of fun stuff, so much so it's hard to get though them all in one sitting. It has this Disney BD-Live Network features that are only available in the U.S.; here you can do things like chat with your friends. I didn't really use this feature but its one that's available where you can use any device in synch with the movie and chat along with people you know. A movie mall feature where you can take video of yourself, superimpose the clip onto one of many pre-selected clips of the movie, and send it off to a friend, colleague, or relative. It also includes a Movie Challenge feature where you can challenge anyone online while watching the movie, and also a direct link to the Disney Movie Rewards site to redeem points towards great prizes.
Overall, I can't praise Pinocchio
enough, it's one of my favorite Disney films and Disney did it right with
the platinum edition DVD and the Blu-ray
disc. This is not only a must own for fans of the film, but a must own for
all fans of Disney films. I look at this disc as an investment in teaching
your kids about the history of Disney films and it's one that no child
should do without seeing. It's a timeless classic. I think it's best
enjoyed as a family, but think that children over the age of six can truly
appreciate what this classic Disney film has to offer.
