With the big budget special effect extravaganza Avatar out in theaters and as it is highest grossing film of all time; space films involving human’s landing on another world to make contact is an idea that has been around for a while. Planet 51 has that same idea that Avatar has, yet this one is somewhat less violent in it’s nature than the war that takes place in Avatar; and not to mention it is an animated film. Planet 51 is about a race of aliens who live on a world that is in an era equivalent to 1950’s. Science fiction movies are the blockbusters that are in their theaters and one in particular seems to fit their pop culture likening. Out in space; Chuck the astronaut (Dwayne Johnson) is making his approach as the first human being to land on the planet. He is supposed to rendezvous with a space rover that went missing on the planet years ago, but instead lands his space pod right in the middle of the alien’s home town. Most of them are terrified thinking that Chuck is invading their planet to kill then all, however one little alien named Len (Justin Long) knows that Chuck is friendly. Together Lem and Chuck will find a way to get Chuck back on board his space craft, but will have to get past the alien government who want to destroy Chuck before he can get back to Earth. Planet 51 is a fun and entertaining film that has me glued to my television screen laughing out load at all the humorous scenes and some funny dialogue. The film is not for younger kids at all, I think children over the age of seven the film is acceptable for, but no one younger. There is a lot of Looney Toons and Sci-fi like action, and some suggestive humor and dialogue. The film is very well animated, with some great use of colors and visual effects. It is not as detailed as a Pixar film, but it holds its own with some great backgrounds and set pieces and an intense fire scene towards the end of the film. Planet 51 has a big cast of talent that have given their voices to help make the film happen. Such talent includes, Dwayne (The Rock ) Johnson, Justin Long, Jessica Biel, Sean William Scott, Gary Oldman, and John Cleese. The Blu-ray disc combo pack comes with a copy of the film on DVD and a digital copy of the film. The disc set features three extended scenes, a music video montage and two featurettes that take you behind the film. Exclusive to the Blu-ray disc is a “Target 51” game with optional iPhone controller app that you can download from iTunes. Overall, Planet 51 is an animated film that is a lot of fun to watch as a family. I can only recommend that as a parent you with your children that are over the age of seven due to some of its content. Younger children might be scared by some of the sci-fi action and not to mention you might be asked some questions you do not want to answer yet due to some of the suggestive dialogue. It is a fun film, which adults will also enjoy a lot. It is very funny and has a good storyline. It a Blu-ray well worth picking up for your older child to enjoy or to just have around the house and watch together with your family. |
