The Review

When I was a child there were only a handful of cartoons and children shows that were deemed educational for children.  There was Reading Rainbow, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and of course Sesame Street.  All these shows were on PBS, publicly  funded , and kids actually learned from them. All the other stations only had one or two shows that educated children, but the majority of the cartoons on television just told stories and the majority of them were violent.   Today, kids have a large variety of educational shows and cartoons to watch. PBS is still the front runner when it comes to educational programs, but Nick Jr., and Discovery Kids are also major contenders.

Super Why is one of the top PBS kids cartoons when it comes to teaching reading, words and using sentences.  It’s a show with four friends all with great imaginations that love to read.  The show incorporates the use of objects and phrases and will show your children the word, the way to spell it, and even how to use it in a sentence. All this of course while having fun and being entertaining at the same time.

Super Why: Peter Rabbit and Other Fairytale Adventures, includes four reading adventures.  The four shows are based around the fairy tales of not only Peter Rabbit, but stories such as Rapunzel, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Tom Thumb. Each episode is full or reading and spelling that teaches your child how to not only understand the story but read it as well. The show is like an interactive book. It has great characters, fun landscapes and animation and its highly entertaining for children of all ages.

Besides the four episodes the DVD has interactive games, Music videos, Printable activities & color pages which can be printed out by putting the DVD into your computer, and a Resources for Parents feature.

I would personally recommend this DVD for kids of all ages, yet I think it sticks more with kids over the age of three. I sat down and watched this DVD with my soon to be three year old daughter and four year old nephew. My daughter maybe watched the first five minutes and then went off in her room to play. My nephew however sat thought the whole DVD. Afterwards I asked him if he liked it, and he told me it’s one of his favorite shows on television. I noticed during the show, he also was repeating the words and sentences he was learning.  It just goes to show that kids can learn from watching educational cartoons.  If your child is having trouble reading, or you want your child to get a jump start on learning to read, I highly recommend letting them watch Super Why on PBS and buying this DVD. It’s well worth the investment in your child’s education.
