SYNOPSIS

The Seeker: The Dark is Rising is based on the novel by Susan Cooper.  The movie is about a boy named Will Stanton who is one of seven children. He has five older brothers and one younger sister. Will is the quiet kid of the bunch and is more of a loner. Will however is a very special kid, and on his fourteenth birthday will discover that  the future of man kind will rest upon his shoulders.  Will is the seeker, a being who can bring balance to the world where the powers of good (The Light) and the powers of bad (The Dark) have been at war for control of the earth. There are six elements that Will must collect as the seeker of the light in order to bring order to the world and stop the evil rider from covering the world in darkness. With the help of a group of wiser warriors of the light, Will travels back and forth between time to collect the elemental charms, however if the dark rider gets his way, he will be the one in control of the elements and he will do anything to get rid of Will and his helping counterparts.

VIOLENCE/GRAPHIC CONTENT/language

There is a lot of things to touch base with when it comes to the violence and graphic content in this film. I'll probably won't be able to name all of them, but I think from what describe you might be able to get the hint. First and foremost there is no blood or any kind of gore in this film, yes the movie goes have some demon like monsters, a witch, evil dogs and a whole flock of crows all of which attack or go after anyone they want to get their hands on. There are also many battle scenes that involve plenty of hand to hand combat, sword fighting and some mixed martial arts.  There is also a scene where Will and his sister go back in time during which a village is being raided and some of the warriors of the invading armies drag women away by their hair. One even throws Will out of boat into the water and almost attacks his sister. There are some references to drinking in this film as well, as two of the older warriors in the film break into a bar and want to get a few drinks. Although they do say they will leave money for them.  The two also bet a drink on what kind of monsters they are going to fight. For children that can't handle some magical action scenes I must caution parents that this film is full of them, especially towards the end of the film when a mass freezing and flood begins. Will can at times also be a bit reckless, much like a lot of fourteen year old boys are. They is a scene where he lights some trees and a windmill on fire, and abuses the powers he has.

There is no foul language at all in the movie, just a few harmless insults between brothers, but nothing over the top. There is no sexual content in the film although Will does have a crush on an older girl, who eventually starts dating one of his older brothers. But the film has no kisses exchanged or anything that would imply some kind of psychical relationship between any of the younger characters.

The Seeker is a film that I'm sure your young boys will love to watch, it's a classic tale of good vs. evil and does present kind of a spiritual storyline. I don't think it's a film for young boys under the age of eight. The movie does have a few scene's in which your basic butter knife is used a weapon when Will gets jealous with one of his brothers. There is also the use of many weapons such a butterfly knife, a cross bow and other kinds of projectile and singular weapons by both good and evil. So that another thing that you might want to be concerned about as young boys like to pretend to fight when they play.

OVERALL VIEWS

The Seeker is a film that is packed full or action and suspense. It's a fun movie for older kids, especially boys over the age of eight.  Kids under the age of eight might see this film as either to violent for their likening or will like it, but might want to mimic the characters. I don't think girls will be too into this film, as it is aimed towards young boys.

The movie is very fun to watch, as an adult I really enjoyed the storyline, the special effects and the action.  The acting in the film pretty good, although the movie does not include many big name actors.  And the storyline, although it can be a bit confusing at times for the most part is somewhat easy to follow. You may get some questions from your kids asking to explain the plot at times, especially the films spiritual elements.

Overall, The Seeker: The Dark is Rising is a positive film for the most part, and it's main goal at it's conclusion is to leave the viewer with the feeling of needing to do the right thing.  The movie also emphasizes the strength of family, and how as a loving family nothing can keep you apart. It's a fun action packed film with a good story and some amazing special effects. I think this DVD will be one that young boys will sit down and watch over and over again.
