The Review

The film that made Pixar Animation Studios a household name was Toy Story, the first feature film produced by the company and released in theaters in 1995. The film had an remarkable first weekend and went on to be the top-grossing film that week. While in theaters worldwide, the film bought in more than $361 million dollars in box office receipts, and in 1995 was the highest grossing domestic film released in theaters.

If you have never seen Toy Story then you are really missing out on an epic piece of animated history. The animated feature stars Tom Hanks as the voice of Woody the cowboy, the number one toy in Andy’s toy box.  Along with Mr. Potato Head, the Slinky dog and a dozen of other toys, when Andy is not around they make due with what they have, chat it up with one another and live the life way a toy should. Yes an new toy is making its arrival into Andy’s room, a new toy that is hot on the market that all the kids are dying to have; a Buzz Lightyear doll.  While trying to scope out what Andy got for his birthday, Woody learns of Buzz’s arrival. Buzz (Voiced by Tim Allen) jumps onto the scene and seems to be the new favorite toy of Andy with all his super cool features and state of the art look. However, instead of befriending Buzz, Woody grows jealous of him and plans to rid Andy’s room of Buzz. However, this backfires and both Woody and Buzz find themselves outside of Andy’s home. Andy has a very mean and usual next store neighbor named Sid who dismantles toys and makes his own odd and unusual creations.  Sid finds both Buzz and Woody outside Andy’s house, and take the two of them captive. Buzz and Woody find themselves trapped in Sid’s room and befriending the misfit toys that Sid has made. Together they will try to escape Sid and evil dog Scud and find their way back to the safety and in the arms of their owner Andy once again.

One of the greatest things about Toy Story is the characters. With both Tom Hanks and Tim Allen voicing Woody and Buzz, you cannot go wrong on using top talent such as these two stars to make the animated feature even better than it already is. In 1995, Toy Story paved the path for computer-animated films to be produced, it is a film that started it all, much like Citizen Kane did for film noir or Star Wars did for visual effects. The broad use of colors and sets, and story line and characterization all together truly make Toy Story the unique and great film that it is.

The Blu-ray combo pack comes with a ton of special features that really make the set will worth it’s weight in gold. The disc includes an exclusive sneak peak at Toy Story 3.  Then there is Buzz Lightyears Mission Logs: Episode One: Blast Off an adventure where Buzz reports to the International Space Station about his fun adventures. Paths to Pixar is a featurette about the artists behind the films where they talk about their careers and share advice about filmmaking and animation. Studio Stories is a series of shorts about life at Pixar Animation Studios. John’s Car – a story about how the director of the film refused to give up his old beat up car after having such success with Toy Story.  Baby AJ – a story about how important Halloween is to Pixar and how one of their employee dressed up as the  big baby from the short Tin Town. Scooter Races – go on a scooter race around the Pixar studios with John Lasseter.  Buzz Take Manhattan – Footage of the Buzz Lightyear balloon at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Last but not least there is the featurette Black Friday: The Toy Story You Never Saw – the story behind the filmmakers of the movie.

Toy Story is a magical movie like no other. Many people say it is still the best film that Pixar has ever produced, and both the characters of Buzz Lightyear and Woody have become pop culture icons. To this day almost fifteen years since the film was released you can talk to any toddler and they will know who Buzz and Woody are. My three-year-old nephew loves both Toy Story films and has almost every kind of Woody and Buzz Lightyear toy they make. For weeks now, my daughter has been asking me when we were going to get these two discs and they have not stopped playing in our blu-ray player since their arrival. Just like Star Wars when I was kid, Toy Story is here to stay though generations to come, and with a third film coming out soon, the franchise can only grow from here. If you or your child are a fan of the films then owning Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray is a must. Never will you find a set of animated films so entertaining for people of all ages.
