Tropic Thunder is a crazy, funny, gore and gun filled movie about making a war movie. Three of Hollywood's biggest star group together along with a rapper who has his own drink and power bar line, and a new comer, are about to make the biggest war film of all time based on a popular book, based on a true story. when the actors can't get a long, and the films director blows a four million dollar shot, the production is almost shut down because it's going way over budget. With his career on the line the director of the film takes his five leading actors into the jungles and drops them off in territory of a drug traffickers. The actors are told the jungle is rigged with camera and are given a map and a script to use while trekking though the jungle. They will soon find out however that this is not guerrilla style Hollywood production but the real deal, and that they will have to try to rescue one of their own from the clutches of the drug traffickers.

Right off the bat, I'm going to warn all the parents out there; this film is not for any kids, young teens or anyone who get offended easily, grossed out or can't put up with stupid over the top humor. Everything that you can possibility think of that would be deemed inappropriate is probably in this film. everything from bodies being blown to bits by land mines, to crude sexual talk and behavior, and every curse word and swear you can think off is used in this film. Honestly folks, this is a film that is not for everyone and I would advise that you only let your teenage kids watch this film if their highly mature for their age. This is not a movie that most adults would care to watch, so you really have to go into this one with an open mind and ready to laugh at some really funny, stupid and horrific scenes.
If you can follow what I just wrote at the bottom of the last paragraph, then your in for one hell of a great time. Tropic Thunder is one of the most politically incorrect films ever made. There are some scenes that many will find very offensive (Such as the disabled boy in a movie that Ben Stiller's character made in his past). There is also a lot of racial talk and so on. So you need to really just enjoy the movie for what it is and let all your morals go out the door for two hours. I myself did find many of the offensive things in the film that many organizations complained about to just be more stupid than offensive. It is a very funny movie, especially some of the one liners used in the film and some of the comedy of Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. combined.
The film does have an all star cast with even a an all star supporting cast. Ben Stiller and Jack Black are their usual funny selves, but I think the top performer in this film was Robert Downey Jr as the Australian actor Kirk Lazarus whom turns himself into a African-American for the movie role. His performance and great monologues and one liners had me rolling on the floor laughing hard. Downey Jr; despite his rough past has really emerged as one great actor this year, he is in his prime right now and I don't see him going anywhere but up from here. The supporting cast includes Jay Baruchel, Brandon T. Jackson, Nick Nolte, Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise as the really annoying producer Les Grossman. Cruise was absolutely heretical in this role. It a film with a really big star studded cast and also includes cameos by John Voight, Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lance Bass and Kevin Pollak.
The Movie has all the glam and glitter of Hollywood despite it's poke at tinsel town. The production value is top notch, with gross out effects, major explosion and gun fight scenes, nice set sand costume design. The films budget was ninety-two million dollars, so it had a big Hollywood budget. But despite it being made by Hollywood it's a crazy off the wall comedy with war like elements that really pokes fun at the industry and all that goes on.
The two disc directors cut DVD not only comes with the version you didn't get to see in theaters, but it also has a ton of special features. Disc one comes with the film along with cast & crew commentaries. The second disc has a ton of features that mainly are featurettes that show how the film was made. Before the Thunder shows cast and crew reads, and how the idea came about. The Hot LZ is about the beginning scene, there is also a featurette about blowing things up. Other featurettes include "The Cast of Tropic Thunder", "Rain of Maddness", Dispatches from the Edge of Madness". Then you have your typical deleted and extended scenes, Alternate Ending, MTV Movie Awards - Tropic Thunder, Full Mags, and Video Rehearsals. It's a disc that is jammed packed with special features and well worth the buy. But As I cautioned above this is not a movie for everyone.
