SYNOPSIS

Click Here The X-men have been part of the marvel universe for many decades now, and with Disney recently launching it's JET-X channel has acquired the rights to show the cartoon series that originally aired in the early nineteen nineties. Volume one features sixteen episodes on two discs.  This set of episodes features the Night of the Sentinels series which are a group of robots created to destroy mutants, and have been known to be one of the main enemies of the X-Men. The discs also include episodes that introduce the origins of some of the X-men and how they came across Professor X and joined the team.  It also features episode that introduce some of the villains such as Magneto and Juggernaut and their back stories as well.

VIOLENCE/GRAPHIC CONTENT/language

There is a lot of animated violence in these episodes, enough so that there are to many things to name. There really is nothing that yells out blood and guts so it's not overly graphic, but there are mutants that are injured and put in situations in which they are either killed or hurt really badly. In the superhero world however we always learn that the villains and heroes truly never die, and I'm not saying we experience this a lot in these episodes, but it's something to be cautious about.  Wolverine always tends to be the most violent and is always looking for a fight.  The Sentinels always take a big beating as they are sliced lasered, crushed and so on. They are evil robots so when they are destroyed we really don't care much for them. But they are violent and are taken out in a violent matter.

There is not a lot of bad language, but there are some adult situations with some of the mutants, particularly Wolverine who always has something violent to say to someone who gets in his way or who wants to fight him. He has a knack for telling people he's going to beat them up or slice them to pieces and such. Juggernaut and Saber tooth seem to also have that kind of mentality as well.

OVERALL VIEWS

I've always was a fan of the X-men. I read the comics when I was younger, and during my high school years I used to watch this animated series after school. I did for a while get hooked on Disney's JET-X channel which at night, shows all of the old super hero cartoons which includes these X-men episodes.  I really don't have much to say about them, other than they are real adventure in the battle of good vs. evil. If you've seen the X-men movies these cartoons are very similar to them in a way that the stories are complex and involve not only the war of good vs. evil mutants, but the politics behind it and the many origins of many of the characters some of which are out of this world.

The DVD set comes with two discs with eight episodes on each disc. There are no special features on this disc, but the episodes on the disc to complete the stories that involve our heroes and villains.  A series like this that contains animated action heroes fighting it out with one another and the fact that some of the actions are violent really makes these episodes not suitable for younger children. When these episodes were produced back in the nineties, we really didn't have the same view of violence in cartoons that we do today. So I would have to say it depends on the child and how well he or she can handle animated violence in animated series such as this one. I think the best age recommendation I can give would be seven and up, but that depends on how well the child can handle it. The X-men animated series is one that as a parent you will need to sit down and check out and decide when would be the appropriate  time to let your child view these discs.
